Check broadband availability for an address
There's no single national checker. Each network has its own, searched by Eircode or address:
| Network | Who it covers | Where to check |
|---|---|---|
| National Broadband Ireland (NBI) | Mostly rural premises in the state-funded Intervention Area, with expected connection dates | nbi.ie |
| open eir | eir's wholesale fibre network, sold through most retail providers | openeir.ie |
| SIRO | Fibre network in towns, sold through retail providers | siro.ie |
| Virgin Media | Its own cable and fibre network, mostly in larger towns and cities | virginmedia.ie |
For a site with no house yet there's no Eircode to search, so check the nearest existing house, then look at the area figures below to see how well covered the area is overall.
ComReg's gigabit coverage figures
ComReg, the communications regulator, publishes quarterly figures for each Census Small Area (about 80 to 120 homes):
- the share of premises passed by a gigabit network (mostly fibre to the premises),
- the same including National Broadband Ireland's planned rollout,
- and the share with an active gigabit connection.
"Passed" means the network runs past the premises and it could order a connection.
The National Broadband Plan
Under the National Broadband Plan, National Broadband Ireland (NBI) is building fibre to premises that commercial operators weren't going to reach, mostly rural. The Department's map shows, for each townland, how many premises are in this Intervention Area and how many are in the commercial area served by eir, SIRO, Virgin Media and others. You can check an address's NBI status and expected date at nbi.ie.
What it can't tell you
- Whether one address can get fibre today. Check the Eircode with operators, or on nbi.ie for the Intervention Area.
- A new build has no Eircode or connection yet. Even in a covered area, a new connection may need a duct or pole run to the house.
- Mobile and fixed wireless coverage are separate; check ComReg's outdoor mobile coverage map.
Common questions
Is there a broadband coverage map of Ireland?
Not a map of the networks themselves: operators don't publish them. ComReg publishes coverage by small area, and the Department publishes the National Broadband Plan map by townland. InSite shows both for any site.
When will I get fibre under the National Broadband Plan?
If the address is in the Intervention Area, nbi.ie gives its expected date. If it's in the commercial area, it depends on the commercial operators' plans.
